Ultimate Solace

Solace
Acrylic on Yupo paper, 12×9

The ongoing theme in my work post-Christ conversion has been restoration. In that process, one of the most poignant ways I’ve been finding love, peace and hope is through my daily commitment to the secret place.

He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High
Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.”
Psalm 91:1, NKJV

Indeed, it is in that quiet, in that stillness, in that time where I allow myself to be immersed in the Word where nothing else can intrude. This single discipline of showing up, every single day, and spending the first hour of my day with the Lord has brought me more solace than I ever thought possible.

Things aren’t perfect, but they’re better. And they always will be better as long as I stop trying to be the god of everything and just let God be God.

To bring this idea to life, this painting began with acrylic ink playfully mixed on top of Yupo paper with the ever present aid of gravity. Once an ethereal dreamlike background was complete, I placed the praying/meditating figure on top and abstracted it through my typical geometric doodles. If you look closely at the hand in the foreground, you will find the word “solace” embedded. This word serves as a reminder of the peace only found through a personal relationship with Jesus and that no matter how messed up one’s life may be, there is respite in the Almighty.
