Blue Piggy and Modern Mirrors

*Oink, oink! Snort, snort!*

Admittedly, I ain’t no Pablo PIG-casso or Albert Ein-SWINE, but I do like to think I know a thing or two about pigs. Well, I know how to eat them at least. Seriously, what tastes better than bacon?

Goofy puns aside, I have to confess that I applied to the upcoming Ardest Gallery’s “Modern Mirrors” show with this above Blue Piggy painting as a last resort. The open call was for portraiture. Naturally, that got me real excited. Often times with open art calls, I’m unsure of how my strange, psychedelic offerings will fit with other more traditional work. But since this was a call for portraits, I was confident I would have a better chance of getting in since portraiture is one of the more prolific things I actually do.

So I submitted six paintings total — the maximum allowed. I chose all people portraits that I thought would make a splash, and then, on a whim, decided to throw in my newly finished Blue Piggy piece just for fun.

And wouldn’t you know it, that’s the only one that got in — more proof that the art world is subjective beyond subjective and I have no idea what I’m doing. Good news is, I don’t think anyone else knows what they’re doing either.

Regardless, this painting came about one day just because I wanted to do something completely different. A cute looking pig popped up on my tablet of random images to reference and I already had the blue paint out so I just went at it. A little while later and voila, there she was.

The opening for Modern Mirrors is this Saturday, September 6 from 5pm to 8pm at the Ardest Gallery in the Woodlands, TX and the show will run through September 27. Stop by to see the cool collection of faces on view and be sure to grab a closer look at Blue Piggy. A couple of hidden words are in the background for those who want to take the time to search.

Can you find them? Tell me in the comments!
