During the month of August, you can find the above piece entitled Flying Poetry hanging at the Madeley Fine Art Gallery in downtown Conroe, Texas as part of the Conroe Art League’s monthly member show. The monthly member show is a great chance for you to see a wide variety of fine art produced by local talent. I am always impressed with the high level of creativity and ingenuity that exists right here in our Texas backyard. Happy to fit in!
My piece took shape originally as a feature for a martial artist. I had done many works of cyclists, runners and other athletes, but hadn’t ever focused on the martial arts. In rummaging through my sketchbook one day I found a rough sketch of a Shaolin style warrior flying through the air.
In midflight with all his muscles tensed in preparation, I thought he looked, quite literally, like flying poetry. Following that direction, I then began to abstract the shapes within the figure.
Fueled by old Wu-Tang albums and a 90s era totally rad color scheme, this quaint little scene that fits on a 10×10 canvas came to life pretty quickly, without much other thought.
It just oozed its way out of me.
Ready for you to see!
What other types of figures would you like to see done in this style? Tell me in the comments!
