Golf isn’t my God-given gift, but I love to golf. I haven’t done it for a while, because I know my obsessive self. I know that if I get out there and hit just one good shot out of a thousand I’ll be golfing 36 holes a day, seven days a week, chasing after that elusive high.
And that’s exactly what it is: a high. Hitting just one good shot, even after a lifetime of terrible ones, gives me enough of a dopamine hit that I want to keep coming back.
Which is why I don’t golf, right now anyway. I know myself. Maybe one day I’ll have time to improve and go after it. For now I’m better off chasing other highs, like finding people who love my art.
Selling a piece of art provides a high, yes. But selling a piece of art to someone who is extremely passionate and appreciative of my art, someone who wants to know more about the process, more about the inspiration, even if it’s only one person per thousand, is the type of high I’m gonna keep chasing.
In my last two shows it’s happened a few times. Yes, overall sales have been slow this year. But the sales that I have made were to people who were ONE HUNDRED PERCENT INTO IT.
Hallelujah! What an amazing feeling! Like hitting one good shot!
And talking to someone like that — the ideal collector who totally gets my visual language — is a super high that I’m gonna keep chasing and chasing and chasing…
Whether it’s golf, art or something completely different, remember how precious those good moments are, fleeting and as irregular as they may be. Keep coming back and your skills will increase and those good shots are bound to multiply.
What’s an example of something you continuously chase after in order to get that one good shot? Tell me in the comments!
